WIKILEAKS

WikiLeaks have a very interesting definition to me, personally I haven’t really focused on this type of work, so hearing about it has really opened my eyes on some types of information that I have seen in the world, and how WikiLeaks is a big reason for that exposure. I think that WikiLeaks has a variety of good, bad, useful, and irresponsible information within it. Information is very important for us U.S. citizens to here, but other information is very much so irrelevant to many people’s lives, and would be better left in the dark. For example, the 2016 election with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, and the scandal about the emails between Hillary and Iraq is information that is very important and should be shared throughout the country, given the circumstances of voting for our next president. For example, if you had to choose between two desserts, one a jelly filled donut and the other a maple bar, wouldn’t you want to know all of the ingredients and things associated with both...? But definitely what is inside that donut? It’s kind of the same thing, before making a big decision you want to know all the facts about each thing. The current state of freedom of speech as well as access to information on the Internet I think stands at a good place. But that doesn’t mean that there can be some adjustments that could be made for the better. Net neutrality has always been a big topic, but is now is a new HOT topic now a days, there is more information on it and current standings that it’s getting closer to happen brings a great concern to not only myself, but to my other fellow millennials. It obligates us give great thought on the future and how our future families will have to deal with this certain issue, and more that come up.

FIRST AMENDMENT, COPYRIGHT AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

After watching a documentary “RIP! A Remix Manifesto”, I thought it was quite interesting that it was all about giving people the chance who want to remake the video or add and share their thoughts on certain stuff. Thirty minutes in, one of the voices in the video claims “these are communities, they’re being created by the opportunity this technology makes available, and this community is engaged by a kind of conversation, each one taking what the other had done and adding to it. Mixing it and changing it and engaging.” Balancing people's ideas and creative thoughts into a video is a great way to express freedom of speech, but there is a length of where it should become balanced with the concept of establishing certain properties and copyrights. There is an instance where a rap artist named J. Cole went out of his way to write a song about another artist and was kind of bashing on him [Lil Pump] after hearing that Lil Pump supposedly tweeted something about him. The song he writes is “1985” in his new album “KOD”. The song is him expressing his take on where artists have ended up and where their intentions lie now that they are making money. He claims that he [Lil Pump] doesn’t know how to make real music that speaks to their fans in a beneficial way. I honestly thought that the song and lyrics expressed accurately where a lot of people think new and upcoming rap artists are now. The song was a bit much, but then I soon watched an interview with Lil Pump and J. Cole, and J. Cole apologizes expressing he didn’t know Lil Pump and vice versa. Now that he’s gotten to know him, they both talked about the incident and they are in a good place now.

The Bachelorette... project #1

https://abc.go.com/shows/the-bachelorette
The streaming television show I chose to pick and pry at was the reality series “The Bachelorette” created by Mike Fleiss. The series started streaming as a spin-off from “The Bachelor” which aired in 2003. although I didn’t start watching both “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” until 2010, I continue to watch the most recent seasons on ABC network, and with this current season it is being about the bachelorette, that is what my media blog project is about. The genre into which The Bachelorette falls into is a definite reality drama/romance tv show. The storyline of “The Bachelorette” is about trying to find true love. Something many, many people across the world can relate to. This current season is about a bachelorette named Becca, and about her journey meeting 25 eligible bachelors to help lead to her to her one and only love, who at the end of the show will get down on one knee and propose in hopes of becoming a newly engaged couple! The particular episode I watched was the most recent one aired on Monday, July 16th, 2018, each man who Becca is still interested in receives a rose from her, and in this most recent episode it came down to the top three men still eligible to win Becca’s heart. Becca visited hometowns this week to meet the guys’ families and see what their home life was like. Towards the end of the episode, Becca had to choose to
let one of the men go. The host, Chris Harrison has hosted each and every season, but the bachelors and bachelorettes change every year. However, there is another spinoff called “Bachelor in Paradise” and this show could return past bachelors and bachelorettes (like a typecast) to help them find love. Commercial breaks inquire News updates on KATU NEWS, car sales, phone, and bank products, ads for Target, fast food restaurants like Mcdonald’s, Cleaning products like Tide, as well as facial cleansing ads with Jennifer Aniston in it. As well as new movies coming out and/or other television previews. When It gets one commercial away from the show resuming, a little ad having to do with either the ABC Network or a breakdown on how to sign up for the next upcoming Bachelor or Bachelorette will pop up to try and persuade you that you too can find your one true love. Out of 14 ongoing seasons, the number of viewers has dropped, and many critics view the show as “boring” and “script like”. The tabloids, on the other hand, are still all over the recent news and juicy gossip having to do with the show. Over the years magazines have been drooling to get their hands on the latest news and scandals about the newly engaged couples and quite frankly, I don’t think they’ll stop anytime soon!

Given this is a reality TV show, the attitude of “The Bachelorette” projected is a very classy and relatable program, that can also have it’s very thrilling, suspense, intense and drama-filled moments. Viewers all over can watch this show and somehow relate to it. Whether it be from experiences they personally had on their own, or something said or done by the cast that they agree with. The audience spectrum is very broad, so the attitude could stay calm, or get real intense real fast. The show preview makes the bachelorette look flawless in a gown of some sort, with full hair and makeup done. This could be to lure more viewers in or to just keep the reputation of the show staying a “high-end” look. The show sets in California, but soon throughout the season, the show moves from fun places Becca chooses for dates, to paradise islands, or countries. Then, soon to hometowns of the top 4 eligible contenders. There are many shows out there similar to “The Bachelorette” in their own way, some for example also on ABC Network is a new reality show “The Proposal”, with the intentions to soon be engaged to someone after an hour of being on the show. “Married At First Sight” on Lifetime Network is the same sort of thing, another like this would be “Are You The One” on MTV Network, couple experts try to match two people together they think is best compatible. All of these shows have the same intentions, and ending goal: To find your perfect match. All of these reality tv shows are to help people around the world to find their missing piece and live happily ever after. The one thing that makes “The Bachelorette” so different than these other shows is it gives the bachelorette more time to get to know each and every contender before making a big decision. She gets to choose who she is most interested in and gets the opportunity to visit their hometown, evaluate if that’s something she would want in the future, and more. These other shows are so quick to get engaged, or the intention of the show is set in stone at one location with the same people, they never get to see what life is like outside with that one person.

Certain generalizations have been made with the show continuing for 14 seasons. Many people get sick and tired of seeing the same thing over and over again, as well as making certain stereotypes on how there's always “that one girl” or “that one guy” that stirs up problems or that nobody likes on the show. But for some reason, the bachelorette chooses to keep him around. I believe this is what some people mean by the show becoming more “script like”, the producers choose a wild or unlikeable cast member to keep the show interesting, and frankly, it works. Most of the time that cast member is the most interesting thing happening all season! The target audience can be a wide range of people, many can find a relation with this show. It is more mature so I would give the age range of 13 years and above. All commercials and advertisements during the show hit many different topics that almost all ages would be interested in viewing. With ABC being a very popular network, it is expected that viewers receive a wide variety of commercial ads.  If I were to put myself in the shoes of someone not from the United States, judging off of this show, I would say the U.S. is very eager people to find love and are scared of being alone. Also, that people need to sign up for shows in order to find their person which in a way is quite sad… but also very entertaining at the same time.

“The Bachelorette” has many strengths. It shows others that you can find love, and it gives viewers a chance to believe that these types of shows do work and bring people together. I would say that “The Bachelorette” accurately reflects real life, because it is all about a normal person who doesn’t have a background of fame, to come into the spotlight and try to find love. There are multiple seasons where the engagement lasts, and one example is Sean and Catherine Lowe.
They were a couple that got engaged on the show, and if you Google them now you can still see that they are happily married and with two children. Weaknesses of the show I would say are growing. It all comes down to personal preference, the person the network chooses to be the next bachelorette some may not like, which causes viewers to go down. Also with the expanding “script like” features in the show also makes it look less realistic and relatable. Personally, I am one of those people that if I don’t like the upcoming bachelorette or bachelor then I won’t watch the show, but if I do like them then I am very interested in each episode. I think without the “script like” notions the TV show wouldn’t be as dramatic and interesting.
Sometimes it does get a little too much and I can get uninterested, but at the end of the day, it is still one of my favorite shows to watch. Having friends that are equally obsessed with the show as me makes a good bonding night. There are always going to be the people on the show that you love and that you hate, which makes a great conversation starter.  I would agree with some critics that the seasons have gotten a little repetitive and boring, also with the stereotype of having that one “villain” on the show each season, but it is something that is entertaining to watch personally. I still can find a way to relate to everything happening so I will stick to watching it and enjoying every minute.

I watch this show on a pretty regular basis, when it is in its current season it premieres every Monday night at 8pm. I usually enjoy watching the show with my family and friends so we can talk about certain people that we like and that we dislike. Also, it’s always fun to see in the end who the bachelorette chooses! At times I’ll be super busy and won’t watch a few episodes so I will go binge watch to catch up. Not only do the cast members of the bachelorette have their own private accounts on social media but the show itself does too. From what I can tell “The Bachelorette” is very involved in all social media aspects: Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. Keeping many people updated on what is currently happening and hints at what will happen in the future on the show. The show averages at least a thousand followers on each social media platform. After watching this show for many years I have got myself to following certain bachelors or bachelorettes from past seasons that I really liked and I still keep tabs on them on Instagram and Twitter.

Upon further examination of this show, it has become very clear to me that people are still very interested in it. Based on the number of viewers each year “The Bachelorette” and “The Bachelor” receive but by the number of applicants eager to be on the show. Other TV shows that are inspired by “The Bachelorette” are out there giving other people around the country a chance to find love as well! All around this is a very inspiring show that you can relate to, as well as a good source of entertainment for you and your family and friends!

PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES - commercial advertising

Trivigo ad:
I chose this commercial as a good ad because it was short enough to just get straight to the point. In the commercial there is a man that says "you have 10 seconds" and in the remaining time he describes the simplicity of just entering in the search bar where you would like to travel, how long you would like to stay, and it gives you options of hotels that fits what you're looking for. The target audience is based on any age of people that are interested in traveling, or looking to set up a vacation. Middle aged people tend to like to travel more and adventure so this could be the main target audience. Plain-folks approach was a persuasive technique used in this commercial by making it look so easy to do. The man in the commercial is dancing while talking like a "I'm doing this while dancing thats how easy it can be for your too!" kind of vibe which was effective. Another technique used that is effective is the integrated marketing technique. This too gives off the appeal that there wants to be a connection made from the producer to the consumer, making them feel specal in a way showing just how easy it is to connect with.
Apple Airpod ad:
I chose this commercial as a dud becuase it was quite confusing to me the whole time. I didn't understand why the man dancing on walls and cars upside down and twisted the whole time was necassary. I couldn't tell you how that could ever create a connection with anyone as well. The targeted audience could be people of all ages who own iphones, or other people that enjor wireless headphones.  It seemed to me that this ad kind of gave off the snob appeal due to it being an Apple product itelf and having it the rep of selling spendy items. I believe they tried going with a plain-folks approach to connect with the consumer of the product as well but I just couldn't see the connection at all on why the things happening in the ad were necessary.

SNAPCHAT AND ADVERTISING

The social media platform I chose to use was Snapchat. This happens to be one of the top media platforms I use on a daily basis. When you swipe over while on Snapchat you come to a page with different things you're interested in, and that you could also subscribe to. For example, some are magazines, others are well-known internet sites, and tv shows. I chose to subscribe to the brand or service called "Tasty". The brand "Tasty" is well known all over social media and has an online site as well. It basically shares food recipes and videos that show how to make them. All the food looks so good, and they are also very entertaining to watch. Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are just a few examples that share this brand all over, subscribing to see what they post, as well as seeing it on your feed by others retweeting or sharing it, helps this brand evolve and get more well known every day.

The effectiveness of this campaign I would say has grown stronger throughout the years. Everybody loves food. Therefore the audience is never limited, and can relate in some way to many people throughout the world no matter what age! Kids, or even teenagers or young adults who are bored, can sit and watch the videos. Older parents who need an idea for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks or even dessert can just go look up certain videos of food recipes that they are interested in. If I were the Product/Brand Manager of "Tasty", I would recommend thinking of making commercial advertising. If a type of food came on the television that looked good to me I would instantly be tempted to check out what it was, as well as be interested more in what else "Tasty" had to give out.

THE INTERNET

Sherry Turkle’s Ted Talk was a very strong, outspoken presentation. Seeing that this talk was in 2012, it is shocking me to compare how far us millennial‘s have come in 2018. Her points that she makes are very valid and got me to truly think about my life and how social media and phones affect it. When she claims that social media has made us all more connected then ever before, I couldn’t agree more. And I also couldn’t agree more with her statement on how it has made us all isolated. We sit behind our laptop screens and our iPhones and androids looking at what’s going on in the world and never having a real conversation. At seven minutes in Turkel’s presentation what really stuck with me was her statment “human relationships are rich, they’re messy, and they’re demanding. And we clean them up with technology.”
I make sure and know that it is very important when I am talking to friends and family to keep my phone away from me. Also I do own an Apple Watch, so with that connected to my phone I can leave my phone farther away than usual and when I get notifications I can tell if it’s an actual emergency or if it is something that can wait.

I am not a big digital gamer, and the games I do have on my phone don’t take up much space. They are mainly a time consumer just for when I’m bored. I enjoy playing the games “Ballz”, “Color Switch”, and “Slither.io” All these games are just really entertaining, and nice when you have time to kill.

If I had to put a number on the amount of hours I spend on social media a week it would probably be around 60 hours total. When I am not with my friends, family, working out, or working, I am most likely on my phone doing something. I do feel like I am part of a networking community because it helps keep me in touch with my friends and if they are busy, and vice versa. I think online gaming communities allow people that are really interested in gaming to have the oppurtunity to build friendships and make connections with others that have similar interests. Personally I am not one of those people, but I can see the other side on why people like it so much!

SOCIAL MEDIA

For this weeks topic, I decided to make a new Twitter account. I chose to do this so I could view more on what is going on in the world without distractions with my friend's tweets or other retweets that really don't interest me at all. With that said the first account I chose to follow is @realDonaldTrump, I thought it would be a good idea to keep an eye on what our president is up to and what he is thinking about for future decisions. The second account I chose to follow was @FoxNews, this also gives me the opportunity to be more involved with things going on in everyday life, as well as possibly seeing things that could affect me or that I could relate to in my life. I also chose to follow @espn, sports is something I'm very involved with in my life, and I enjoy keeping up to date with athletes nowadays.

A tweet that really tempted me to like it and/or retweet was a post by Fox News. It was a video taken from a rear view camera of a police car. The content was of a distracted driver in Georgia that completely disregarded the cop in front of him coming to a stop. The driver totaled the front of his car, as well as damaging the back of the officer's car. I thought this would be a good retweet to share with others to help them become more aware of what distracted driving can lead to!

I feel that social media has enhanced my ability to take action or participate in democracy and other activities due to the ability to make connections with people and others around the world. I fully believe this helps to get others more aware and involved with things that they can either relate to, find an interest in, or become aware of. Through social media, you can become inspired to make a change, or have a voice on certain topics that interest you. I think that this is an advantage of social media. In Sherry Turkel’s Ted talk “Connected, But Alone?” She states that online and social media is a connection to many people, and although she claims that it is not a real "conversation" these people have had with each other, it is still a form of not being alone. People become very comfortable online where they can share their ideas and feel that they have a voice that will be heard!
